New for February

Before I share my NEW plans for February, I'll recap January's...

BOOK: That Supreme Court book is getting awfully dusty on my nightstand! I didn't entirely abandon my plans to sup up my brain power. I opted for a dose of historical fiction with the novel Fire of the Covenant. Not my standard fare, but a surprisingly gripping book that shed light on an area of LDS history I've always wanted to know more about. Justice Rehnquist will get his turn in February.

FOOD: Generally speaking, all plans in my life are flexible. I never know exactly what is going to happen until it actually does. So the Mediterranean Tune Steaks got shelved in place of Bourbon and Brown Sugar Flank Steak. Now I know what a bum must feel like, going into a liquor store and buying the cheapest bottle of bourbon and feeling victorious with that little brown paper bag which will soon bring some yummy pleasure. Mine bourbon, mixed with dijon mustard and brown sugar made a steak which strong armed me into submission. Thank goodness the Garlic Chive Potatoes smoothed my pallate. A good meal but not one I'll make over and over.

PLAY: I had a very small but very poignant moment of mommy recognition: Mixing PlayDoh is okay. In fact, it's way more fun for my 3 year old to mix it than to have me constantly over her shoulder reminding her to leaver the pink and green separate. Afton loves her rainbow PlayDoh and the mashing of color inspired her to play longer and harder with the salty delight. I can buy a new pack for less than two bucks anyway...

For February I'm really going to give the Supreme Court book a fair shake. I'm really excited to make Caribbean Sweet Potatoes and Black Beans (I already bought the ingredients and will be sharing the sweet and spicy meal with a visiting Grandpa this week). I'm determined to find a good library reading time for Afton and Abel. The library closest to us has a very uncomfortable program which Afton thinks is "weird" and I agree. We just don't dig filmstrips. I think Barnes and Noble will be our best shot. We wandered in there on Saturday and found a lovely bohemian group of families listening to a delightful telling of The Hobbit. For a moment, I felt I was back home in Portland with all the dreds, layered skirts and colorful cottons. Maybe Richmond has a surprisingly under layer of culture that I haven't tapped yet.

I have been dying to join a book club for some intellectual stimulation. What do you think of creating one here? I'm up for reading about the Supreme Court!
