12 Days of Service and Tradition: Day 2

Service

Giving a gift to someone who may not get anything else this season is a special joy. Our family is putting together a gift bag for an elderly woman at church for a small service activity. Like many of you, we stick to a budget, especially for Christmas when expenses can get out of hand. As I was putting this together yesterday, I realized that I didn't need to spend very much money on it because I had several great, new and unused items around my home or items that I could create (pictured above). You too can give this kind of service and not overwhelm your checking account. Just look at your craft bucket and use what supplies you have to make cards, dig into your personal care stores and give some nice lotion or soap, maybe you are like me and have brand new picture frames tucked away to share. Then add a few items from the store like a crossword puzzle book, a holiday scented plug-in and some cozy socks and you have a great gift bag to share with an elderly neighbor, friend or stranger.

Tradition
Hanging ornaments with Christmas music backing up your tinsel adventure is my favorite way to start off the season. Break out the candy canes, drink some egg nog or cocoa and hang away! Let your kids put some ornaments any way they want, and let them rearrange them throughout the season...you can't expect them not to touch things so shiny and fun! We aren't getting a tree this year because we will be out of town for the holidays and because we have a 9 month old who would eat it. But I still have to put up ornaments, so this is what we did:

decorate our entertainment stand with garland, berries, lights and ornaments

hung ornaments on garland above closets

Deck you halls today, if you haven't already!!!

I really like the idea of hanging your ornaments on a garland. We only have like 5, so I'm thinkin' it's do-able for us.

Hi Liz,

I couldn't find a way to email you directly, so I thought I'd post to you here. I remember that you were looking for brown boots and I found a great deal on some brown boots through Amazon. If you are interested, I was able to use some different codes to get them for $50 shipped (they are almost $300 retail). Here they are: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FHAL20/ref=amb_link_3958842_2/104-4797993-4535105
If you are interested, just let me know. :) Jenn

Great ideas, Liz. Thanks for sharing. It'll be fun to check back and get the 12 days worth of ideas. I love the wrapped book idea. Erin does that too. I think we'll do that next year.
