Some of you know that I think Thanksgiving is a lesser holiday. After a recent conversation with my 3 year old, which went like this: "Mom, when is Halloween?" "It's over. Now our holiday is Thanksgiving." "Yeah, then it's CHRISTMAS!!", I realized I needed to find some love for the day of turkey and thanks, so that my children can have their own choice to love or hate the day. I dug up some fun ways to teach little ones about Thanksgiving:
1. Make a thankful bag with your child. Find items or photos of items your child is thankful (I explain thankful as happy) for. Help her draw pictures of the items then put in a bag. Throughout the month, bring out the bag and talk about the thankful things. Adapted from kids domain.
2. Turn every day art projects into cards for family members and friends. Help your child write or draw a small list of things they are grateful/happy for in regards to that person.
3. Make custom placemats for your special feast. Use large paper to decorate with turkeys (there are a million different ways to make craft turkeys), thanksgiving stickers or even leaves. Laminate and let your child help set the table with these for your dinner. Look here for other fun table crafts.
4. The photo idea (pinecone turkey) is from Family Fun. I love any turkey that doens't start with a handprint!
These are just a few ideas that I think will work well with small kids. I'm sure there are loads of other great ideas, please share yours!

The little ones should be aware of the importance of the celebrations. Teaching them about Thannksiving from an early age is really essential. I really appreciate your efforts with your kid. It's really very nice. And hey if you looking for more ideas and suggestions then just visit my Thanksgiving Blog sometime and find out all the resources I've posted. And while you're at it please do share your thoughts. Well have a great Thanksgiving celebration.
Now that Pria is old enough to care about holdidays I find myself reliving the enjoyment of them. I love all the holdidays, relevent or stupid...they are fun to me. Chris generally can't stand them and wants nothing much to do with anything outside of Christmas. So thanks for putting up tips on getting her understanding Thanksgiving as more then a day of eating ;)
