okay i don't really demand the best, but when i do spend money on the best i do demand it function as the best. the last few months have been full of serious complaints being met with happy solutions:
1. we registered for and received pottery barn dishes for our wedding. after a few years i realized ours were defective (they got little gray scratches all over). i started sending emails, making phone calls and a few letters. a few weeks ago the gm of my local store contacted me to give me new dishes. i wish i would have chosen to upgrade since mine are only available in the outlet but still...i got brand new dishes!!!
2. patrick has a big thing about shoes. it's difficult to find attractive shoes in a size 13 that are also comfortable (with implants) along with specific lists patrick always has for his shoes. we ALWAYS buy our shoes at nordstrom because of their open return policy, which we use. on the off chance we pick up a pair elsewhere it is good to know that most decent brand shoes will honor an internal exchange for defective shoes. Born and Merrell have come through for patrick this year will brand new shoes.
3. i'm not a fan of gap's new return policy. in fact i hate it and have stopped shopping there for most things. patrick had a pair of jeans that were clearly defective (i worked there for 5 years so i think of myself in the know with denim defects) and the store people snooted around at us about them. it took a few phone calls (patrick handled this one) and then a customer service manager called the local store and told them to give him new jeans. take that!
4. red robin isn't the best, but we love burgers and our red robin just happens to be the best we've tasted. we don't dine out much so when we do i want good food, just the way i want it. last week we went to rr and waited 40 minutes for cold, undercooked burgers. our disappointment was obvious so our server sent the manager our way. she comped our whole meal!! that made me happy enough to go back. eventually.
the moral: don't be satisfied with broke down stuff. if you spent cold cash on good items that don't return their promised investment. give a call, jot a letter and see if happy solutions don't come your way too!
disclaimer: i don't seek this out. it just seems that several things we love have turned bad lately! so i've made a big deal about it.

Wow--glad the situations worked out well for you. I definitely want you on my side!
You should give lessons.
amen sister. I was amazed at how many baby products didn't function properly (toys, pack n play, high chairs (2!)) and I worked hard to get it resolved. I didn't pay much attention to such things until we went from two paychecks to one. And now I think of all the things I didn't return and should have and money wasted in past year cos I was lazy.
Glad to hear that you finally got your dishes!
