Barbie is not a welcome toy in our home. With her bosoms and difficult to put on clothing, not to mention the tiny shoes that Abel will certainly gag on. Afton has asked and then begged for a Barbie a few times but I have held my ground. Barbies are for big girls.

I was raised in a home where being unique was encouraged. Yes, I had Barbies, lots of them, but I also had a pinball machine, science exploration kits and special dolls not to be found at big toy stores. Maybe this is why I don't want Barbies moving in right now. I like having different toys from the other kids at our house. Like these adorable dolls with spunky personalities that we love or these sweet magical dolls.

And then there are the boobs. Afton is very interested in breasteses right now. She points them out on mannequins (and checks under the shirt to make sure they are the real deal), finds any hint of roundness on toys and giggles when she tries to cop a feel of one. I know this is an ages and stages thing and certainly do not need Barbie- in all of her naked splendor- parading perfect bosoms around our house to encourage the boob infatuation.

I also generally detest the aura of Barbie. She's self centered and cheap. She looks like a hooker or a Stepford wife depending on her outfit of choice. Barbie collectors weird me out. I visited the home of a Barbie fanatic a while back, with wall painted perfect pink and the showcases of Barbies in wedding gowns, cultural garb and bi kins staring at me with their creepy judgemental eyes that say "you're not as good as me."

When Afton turns 5, the age limit of Barbie will expire and I will let her have one (or 17). But I will find sweet satisfaction by stepping on Barbie's perfectly made up face and by squishing her head until she looks like an evil troll.
