i'm getting ready to drive to buffalo, ny by myself. i have a lot of motivation since the end result is a week with my sister and her excellent family (4 cousins for afton and abel)! but i'm starting to realize the huge task in front of me so here is how i'm preparing:
1. presents. i've hidden some of afton's favorite toys for a week now. she'll be so excited to unwrap old and some new toys. thank goodness target's $1 bins are presently stocked with princess items.
2. movies. i borrowed a portable dvd player since i can't use patrick's laptop on this trip. and i've been saving some new movies for afton to watch.
3. candy. smarties aren't going to cut it on this trip so i've been on the look out for new great candy. afton will love the bubblegum and cotton candy flavor candy sticks.
4. car games. riddly-riddly dee-dee-dee, cloud shapes, and where-did-afton -go should entertain for at least 30 minutes.
5. tunes. we love dan zanes house party and laurie berkner for silly but tolerable kid tunes.
wow, that doesn't sound like much! i'm in need of anything you've got for distraction, time consumption and baby tips.

I like drugs myself.
Yay! I can comment on your blog again! They must have fixed the problem.
i've missed you!
drive at night, if you can. We have a fussy baby in the car, and drove 4 hours to NH and he slept the whole time. And we had great conversation and music! Good luck and have a great time!
I love books on cd/tape for car rides, don't know if afton will dig it, but there are the ones at the library with a book to follow along, those are fun. It's fun to hear a book narrated by someone other than Mom and Dad.
just do what i do, beat your head against the steering wheel.
You could "pit stop" here for a run around the park, snack, and to browse through our DVDs. We would love to see you, even for a few minutes of stretching.
amy: i may take you up on that on the way back next sat. i don't think you really want to see us at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning!
Laura: westchester is not on the way BUT we're making it on the way home when we trek to buffalo over xmas. hopefully you guys will be there!
You've probably already left but maybe for the way back. The color wonder markers and coloring books are awesome. Will loves them, and he's around the same age as Afton.
Also those magnadoodles are good. Give her little hands something to do. Will loves watching movies, and on our last road trip (I drove from NM to Washington in two days just me and my kids) Will and I had conversations about the rocks, and trees, mountains and moons, colors, clouds, snow, whatever you can find. He loved having "talks" with mom while we were driving.
Also those viewmaster 3-D picture things are really cool too!
You already left by the time I got back from my trip, but for next time...I say glow sticks at night along with flashlights of different colors and shapes. Books...books..books and colorwonder for day time.
Hope you had a good time!
